History
Used in the Ryan School from June 1935 until sold to Baron Von Eyssenhardt who was a former member of the German Imperial Air Force, (Luftstreikratte)
He purchased the aircraft while a flight student in the Ryan School. One time he and John Fornasero flew to Mexico City. While en-route they found themselves surrounded by Insurrectionists who looked upon the fast ST (this was in Guadeloupe) as an excellent aid to their projected rebellion, until a letter of credentials was presented to their leader.
A hurried departure from Guadeloupe under the cover of darkness brought them into Leon where a night landing was made and military guards placed on the plane to prevent possible theft.
Commercial and Military aircraft operators at Mexico City stated that no airplane had ever been demonstrated at the 7300 foot Valbuena field, which showed the remarkable performance of the Ryan ST at these high altitudes.
The flyers spent ten days on their trip, which took them into approximately a dozen airports throughout the interior of Mexico. After the trip the Baron left for his home in New York, and soon after left with the baroness for Argentina to act as sales rep for the Ryan company. It is not known if he ever sold any Ryan’s.
Between February 1938 and August 1939 the ship was flown to the east Coast where through O. J. Whitney company of New York, the aircraft was sold to Richard Wynn.
In March of 1941 Virginia Cub Distributors became the next owner where they operated it in their flight school under the direction of Roy W. Franke. It was used up to about 1942 as a secondary trainer in a Navy cadet program at the University of Virginia Airport, Shadewell, Virginia.
Sometime during WWII it was sold to Air Activities. The last FAA inspection was on November 26th, 1940 by James L Hurst.
