History

This was the first Ryan to be exported out of the United States. It was sold new to

Antonio L. Seabra, and shipped via steamship on August 13th, 1936. Mr. Seabra apparently had a friend and associate in the US by the name of David McMenanin of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania who corresponded with the Ryan company regarding the license PP-TMB and equipment before the airplane was shipped to Brazil.

The registration NC16037 was retained by the C.A.A. and later assigned to ST-A SN 178.

PP-TMB was assigned by the Brazilian Government and painted on the fuselage side before it was shipped by the factory.

While in Brazil the customs stamped 1-9-37 on the firewall.

The next owner, about 1939 was Sr. Fernando Mentges Filho, also of Rio. In about September 1937 Filho had an accident with the airplane, of which details are not known. He shipped the aircraft via the steamship SS “West Ira” on September 2nd in a box to the Ryan Company in San Diego for repairs.

At this time PP-TMB was changed to PP-TBM.

It was ready after repairs to be shipped back to Brazil in December 1937. Finally after much delay because of teh start of WWII in Europe, it was shipped in a crate aboard the Japanese Yamashita Line, but it was not until after March 1938 that the airplane arrived in Brazil.

The Ryan company had no further correspondence with Filho after November 1938.

In 1945, before May 11th, Filho died in a crash in this airplane, he had a passenger who also died in the crash, which occurred at Campos Estrado do Rio, Brazil. It appears the aircraft remains no longer exist. No further information is known.
