History
Mainly used for pleasure, and flight training, an interesting story surfaces with regards to 14911. In September 1937 while being operated by Foster lane of Port Columbus flying school, the aircraft was involved in a freak accident.
A parachutist by the name if David Binns, a member of a Sunday barnstorming group, going up for a jump from this ST for some reason started out of the aircraft on the right side (wing walk is usually only on the left) and his pilot chute slipped out of the parachute pack and popped open, pulling the main canopy as he jumped, and the whole works wrapped itself around the tail surfaces. The Pilot, Cliff. W. Haney of Woodland hills, California, tried to manoeuvre the plane but could not as the controls would not move. By some stroke of fate, Binns chute billowed out, while he was unconscious from being choked by the shroud lines, and both plane and Binns were let down to the ground. The plane was badly damaged, and eventually made airworthy again.
After the rebuild it was apparently re rigged incorrectly, and became quite temperamental according to Mrs Ruth Stam, who flew it on occasion. “A pilot coming in to land was never sure if he would land outside the fence of the airport or inside” she said.
The aircraft was used for the C.P.T.P training program to train WW2 pilots.
Final disposition- wrecked June 23, 1946 at Pal-Waukee airport, Waukegen, Illinois. Remains, (Wing and tail) later purchased by Dorr Carpenter of Chicago.
