History
This Ryan was sold new on October 5, 1937 to Mary E. Pike, as an ST-A Special. Mary picked it up at the factory and flew it to Grande Central Air Terminal (no longer in existence) at Glendale, California, where she kept it hangared. She ordered it with several extras, such as military type windshields, aux fuel tank, and a radio. She used the Ryan mainly for pleasure.
Miss Pike sold it on March 23, 1940 to Oscar Ferreira Jr. at Los Angeles Mills Field. It was shipped to Brazil and assigned Brazilian registration PP-THJ on October 22, 1940.
On Christmas day 1941, Ferreira took off from his home field and was gaining some altitude when the engine quit. He tried to reach the field, but could not and was forced to land on the roof of a house. The fuselage and the landing gear were extensively damaged. Sometime later, about 1947? It was sold to Darcy Viera in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and later still to Antonia Carlos Favaro. At that time it is reported to have had a Gypsy engine, model 1901-1, series 85934. There is a report of an accident on January 29, 1962, but no other details are known.
Silvio Ambrogi was the next owner, and was using the airplane for parts in rebuilding ST SN 127 (N16038) with the registration PP-TBO.
After rebuilding registration marks PT-JOK were allocated. During a flight for a new C of A at Sao Jose, Campos with the temporary registration PP-ZAN, it was involved in a accident, when it ground looped, and overturned, damaging the propeller and landing gear. The aircraft was being flown by a friend of the owner. The owner at the time and still today was Murilo Rudolfo Penteado Leonardi of San Carlos, S.P. Brazil. Accident was on June 6, 1974. The aircraft has apparently not flown since the incident.
The aircraft is currently stored in Mr. Leonardis hangar, along with a large collection of motorcycles, cars and some ultralight aircraft.
