History
It appears this Ryan first belonged to a Mr. Ressler, a salesman for Babb Co. And used as a demonstrator, but this has not been confirmed. Next owner was Wallace D. Bassett, of the Bassett and Phelps Flying Service of Santa Paula, California, who purchased the airplane on January 4, 1938. Mr. A.J. Dewey was the pilot on the delivery flight from San Diego to Santa Paula. It came out of the factory with a special red stripe on the fuselage. Apparently a Monocoupe was taken by Ryan in trade. In November 1941 it was still owned by Bassett.
It was used in the CPTP program during WWII. It kept the ``bean pot boiling`` according to Jim Dewey who spoke highly of the airplane.
It had an incident close to the ground in 1942, at Baker, California during the CPTP program.
In 1946 it was owned by Fred Osbourn, who used it for pleasure.
William C. Shute Jr. Purchased it in January 1947 in disassembled condition.
Leon Axelson purchased it sometime in 1947. The aircraft was completely rebuilt in 1955 after a crash landing.
Axelson sold it around January 1964 to Russell C. Brown, who trailered it home to Emporia, Kansas and began the long rebuild process.
Rumour has it that Brown completed the plane after seven years of work, and flew it in late 1972. On July 3, 1972 it is reported that he had a forced landing and the plane was damaged again.
The accident was on July 3, 1972 at Williamsburg, Missouri. The propeller bolts failed in flight and he shut the engine down, and collided with a fence upon landing off airport. The aircraft went over on its back, and was extensively damaged. There were no injuries. Dorr Carpenter purchased the airplane and once again rebuilt it to flying condition.
In 1976 it was owned by a Jim Loveless.
As of June 1982 it was owned by William Rose of S. Barrington, Illinois, but not in airworthy condition, and it apparently requires re-skinning. It was last known to be in storage.
After Bill Rose passed away his extensive holding of Ryan parts, and projects were purchased by Graham Hosking of Tyabb, Victoria, Australia, and it is assumed this airframe was included in the purchase?
