History
It was sold new on August 25, 1937 to Air Industries Inc., and shipped crated via rail to their operation at Wayne County Airport, Romulus, Michigan. A customer of them, E.F. Knight purchased the airplane from them shortly after. He and his brother used the airplane for pleasure only.
Then on July 3, 1940 he sold it to William Joy, who became the next (last?) registered owner. (Joy also owned SN 163, NC17358)
A student pilot by the name of Frank B. Mason Jr., used to rent the plane often, and on September 23, 1940 was practicing spot landings when he had an accident and completely demolished the airplane.
According to the CAA report, Mr. Mason stalled the airplane while negotiating a spot landing. During the landing approach the engine apparently lost power and did not respond to the throttle. Mr. Mason undershot the airport, stalled close to the ground, and crashed. Only the engine and empennage were salvageable. No other details known, parts could still exist.
